Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/low provides an exciting array of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand.
